Munich/Düsseldorf, February 10, 2025 – Uniper SE and STABL Energy are launching their collaboration as part of the M5BAT-4.0 project at RWTH Aachen University. In the second half of 2025, a battery energy storage system (BESS) from STABL will be installed, extensively tested, and evaluated at the renowned research site in Aachen. The focus will be on providing energy services and delivering balanced energy to stabilize the electricity grid.
The installation of the STABL battery storage system marks the beginning of a long-term partnership: If the system meets the agreed performance criteria, Uniper plans to prioritize STABL’s battery storage solutions until 2036. The potential minimum volume amounts to 740 MWh—a groundbreaking step for the energy transition, grid stabilization, and the decarbonization of the electricity market. Together, STABL and Uniper aim to expand the application possibilities of battery storage systems.
M5BAT is an innovative, large-scale stationary storage facility with a capacity of 6 megawatts, housed in a specially converted building. This facility integrates multiple battery technologies into a single large-scale storage system. The study’s findings will provide valuable insights into the suitability of different battery types across various application scenarios and offer well-founded knowledge for future energy storage strategies. Additionally, the economic viability of these technologies will be directly assessed through the trading of storage capacities on the real energy market.
