Volatile electricity prices, stable storage solution
When it comes to durable, highly functional coatings, Giga Coating GmbH is a real heavyweight. The company specialises in innovative coating solutions for metallic components in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, among others. System Trailers Fahrzeugbau GmbH, an independent and neutral vehicle manufacturer that designs and produces swap-body transport systems customised to individual customer requirements, is also based on the same site. Both energy-intensive companies now use battery storage systems to ensure that the power supply for both is always optimised during operation and that the electricity demand is controlled just as efficiently.
The coating company and the vehicle manufacturer System Trailers both based in Twist in Emsland, close to the border with the Netherlands, use their state-of-the-art systems and a team that loves precision to ensure that surfaces not only ‘shine’, but above all protect and last. They are now going one step further together at their production site to strengthen their own self-sufficiency in electricity.
In future, they will become independent of volatile electricity prices or grid fluctuations and use dynamic electricity prices to optimise their own electricity prices and increase their own consumption. In future, STABL Energy’s stationary battery storage system will not only store electricity intelligently. In the form of atypical grid usage, current peak loads of over 1 MW are also smoothed out, resulting in considerable savings in grid usage fees.
The storage system from STABL Energy is configured for 405 kW and 1,3 MWh of usable capacity and utilises a total of 288 second-chance battery modules of type E60, which have not had the chance to be installed in vehicles. Thanks to STABL’s unique, modular multilevel inverter technology, these are given a new purpose and thus a second life for a genuine circular economy and 100 % resource efficiency.
In 2022, STABL’s partner company Greenflash installed a photovoltaic system with an output of 2 MWp on the roofs of the Giga Coating and System Trailers halls. It is controlled by the GreenX1 Controller™, which distributes the solar power generated to the company’s consumers as required. Previously, surplus electricity was mainly fed into the grid. With the storage solution installed in June 2025, which Greenflash planned together with STABL Energy, this electricity can now be efficiently stored temporarily and utilised in a targeted manner.
Thanks to their own PV system and the battery storage system, the companies are able to build up a substantial energy depot. They use the self-generated solar power when it is really needed for peak shaving.
“This allows us to limit the ever more expensive voltage peaks and also participate in arbitrage trading. By combining the STABL battery technology with the innovative control technology from Greenflash, we can get the best out of the technologies for ourselves,” emphasises Ralf Saatkamp, Managing Director of Giga Coating and System Trailers. The storage container also ensures an optimum power supply at all times and makes the site less dependent on fossil fuels. Three more energy storage systems are being planned. In this way, not only do the coated products remain durable, but the company’s energy supply also remains ‘consistently sustainable’.
“As energy-intensive businesses, both companies are benefiting from the switch to an optimised in-house power supply, thereby taking an important step towards climate-neutral production. This proves that energy refinement has just as much future potential as surface refinement,” says a delighted Dr Nam Truong, CEO and co-founder of STABL Energy.
With the installation of stationary battery storage systems, Giga Coating and System Trailers have not only reduced their energy costs, but have also reached an important milestone on the road to a greener energy future. A truly successful ‘refinement’ of its own energy balance!
