Save costs with individual grid fees

Atypical Grid Usage through Peak Shaving: Minimising Grid Fees

Find out how STABL energy storage systems can help you achieve atypical grid usage through peak shaving, efficiently cushioning and minimising rising grid charges quickly and smartly.

STABL 360 Degree Services as a comprehensive carefree package for partners

Anyone who deliberately schedules their energy usage outside of the peak times defined by the grid operator is using the electricity grid in an atypical way and can therefore apply for a reduced grid charge in accordance with Section 19 StromNEV.

What Does Atypical Grid Usage Mean?

Applications for atypical grid usage and peak shaving

How energy-intensive companies reduce their grid fees

According to Section 19 (2) sentence 1 of the Electricity Grid Charges Ordinance (StromNEV), grid operators are obliged to offer an individual grid charge if the maximum load of a company deviates significantly from the general maximum load in the grid. Energy-intensive companies with special consumption patterns in particular can benefit from this. The basis for this is that the company’s own maximum load is outside the peak load time windows specified by the grid operator, i.e. it is simply shifted. Atypical grid usage is therefore also considered a special form of peak shaving or peak load capping.

Incidentally, the peak load time windows are published every year by October 31 and are valid for the following year. So if your electricity consumption takes place at times when the grid is under less load, you can significantly reduce your regular grid fees with the help of this targeted atypical grid usage.

Calculation example for normal grid usage

Background: Since the beginning of 2025, all electricity customers have had to adjust to higher costs. This is due to rising grid fees, which make up a significant proportion of the electricity price. The Federal Network Agency has published the new distribution grid fees in the individual regions and the effects of the distribution of renewable energy grid costs. A list of distribution grid operators and the old and new charges in the individual regions are published on the Federal Network Agency's website. With normal grid usage, your electricity costs will therefore continue to rise without you being able to do anything about it.

Applications illustration example of atypical usage

Savings example Atypical grid usage

Anyone who deliberately sets their load peaks outside the peak load time windows defined by the grid operator is using the electricity grid atypically - and can therefore apply for a reduced, individual grid fee in accordance with Section 19 StromNEV. Our graphic shows how companies can save up to 40% on their grid charges in this way.

Why STABL battery storage?

Stability for Energy Future

Our battery storage systems are specially designed to act as a buffer between energy consumption and power supply. If you need less electricity than the grid capacity allows, or if you have surplus energy from your own generation sources such as solar or wind, this electricity can be temporarily stored in an electricity storage system. This prevents the surplus electricity from being lost or fed back into the grid unnecessarily. This also stabilizes electricity consumption from the grid and balances out fluctuations in consumption. You draw less expensive electricity from the grid, as the storage system steps in during peak load times and also guarantees reliability.
