Subsidies from the EU

Funding Programs by European Union

As part of particularly innovative or cross-border projects, there are funding programs from the European Union for storage projects, often in combination with photovoltaic systems and charging infrastructure. These are often aimed at project consortia or projects with a demonstration character. They are characterized by high funding amounts, but are associated with high requirements and complex application procedures.

LIFE: Program for Environmental and Climate Protection Projects

Funding programs by European Union EU for energy storage

Type of funding

The LIFE program is a central EU funding instrument for environmental and climate protection measures, particularly in the areas of energy transition, resource efficiency, climate protection and climate adaptation. Eligible for funding are pilot and demonstration projects in the field of energy storage as part of climate protection measures, projects for the integration of renewable energies and optimization of energy systems as well as innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Measures to improve energy efficiency and resource use as well as climate adaptation strategies are also eligible for funding.

Eligible persons

Companies (incl. SMEs), municipalities and public institutions, NGOs, research institutions, international organizations and consortia from several EU Member States or associated countries.

Funding conditions

Non-repayable grant. Generally up to 60% of eligible costs, for certain nature and biodiversity projects up to 75%. The project volume often ranges from several hundred thousand to several million euros. Selection is based on topic-specific calls with fixed submission deadlines.

Innovation Fund: Promotion of Low-CO₂ Technologies

Funding programs by European Union EU for battery storage

Type of funding

The Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest funding programs for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies. The aim is to support pioneering projects such as large and small-scale energy storage systems (e.g. battery storage, hydrogen storage), the integration of renewable energies into industrial and energy systems, technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in energy-intensive industries, innovative approaches to carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and general system solutions for a climate-neutral economy.

Eligible persons

Companies of all sizes including start-ups and SMEs, project consortia consisting of several partners, public and private institutions as well as research institutions in cooperation with industrial partners.

Funding conditions

Non-repayable grant with a funding rate of up to 60% of the eligible costs. The amount of funding depends on the project type: Large projects: Funding volume > € 7.5 million Small projects: Funding volume < € 7.5 million Support for investment and operating costs, payment is partly dependent on the emission reductions achieved. A total budget of around €38 billion is available from 2020-2030. Selection is based on topic-specific calls for proposals for various sectors, including energy storage.

Horizon Europe: Research and Development Projects

Funding programs by European Union EU for electricity storage

Type of funding

Horizon Europe is the EU's central research and innovation program (2021-2027) with a total budget of around 93.5 billion euros. The aim is to promote projects that drive scientific and technological progress in Europe. Cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility, which specifically supports innovations in energy storage and the integration of renewable energies, is particularly relevant for battery storage systems.

Eligible persons

Research institutions, companies (including SMEs and start-ups), industry associations, public and private organizations and consortia of partners in EU Member States and associated countries.

Funding conditions

Type of funding: Non-repayable grant. Funding rate: up to 100% of the eligible costs (depending on the type of call). Individual calls with project budgets of several million euros, e.g. up to 5 million euros per project in the field of stationary long-term storage, as well as a selection via topic-specific calls with fixed submission deadlines. Participation takes place via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal at https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/.
