Federal subsidies

Funding Programs From the Federal Government

The German funding landscape offers enormous financial scope. However, those who want to benefit from the federal government are often faced with a jungle of funding programs and opportunities. In this overview, we show you which ones currently offer the greatest leverage for your electricity storage project.

Federal Program to Increase Energy Efficiency in Agriculture and Horticulture of the Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung (BLE)

Third-party capital: BUND funding programs finance your battery storage system

Type of funding

Grants from the federal office BLE for individual measures for the conversion to energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through measures such as renewable energy and electricity storage.

Eligible persons

Agricultural and horticultural businesses in Germany.

Funding conditions

Eligible CO2 savings investments after energy consulting are photovoltaic systems and small wind turbines as well as electrical energy storage systems. The maximum grant is based on the CO2 savings achieved and is limited to an amount of €1,200 (for small and micro companies) or €900 (for medium-sized companies) per ton of CO2 saved annually. The minimum amount for a grant is €12,000 and the maximum amount is €600,000 per company and investment. Only net expenditure is eligible for funding.

Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau KfW Loan No. 270 Renewable Energies: The Promotional Loan

Third-party capital: BUND funding programs finance your energy storage system

Type of funding

Investments in Germany and abroad for power and heat generation plants, grids and storage facilities for photovoltaics, water, wind and biogas for private individuals, companies and public institutions.

Eligible persons

Domestic and foreign private and public companies - regardless of size, corporations, foundations and institutions under public law, municipal special-purpose associations, private individuals and non-profit applicants as well as freelancers.

Funding conditions

Loan amount up to EUR 150 million per project, no minimum amount, up to 100% of eligible investment costs. Minimum term is generally 2 years. Investment grants possible via the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). The maximum funding amount is 10 million euros per project, with a funding rate of up to 40 percent of the recognized investment costs. A minimum operating period of 3 years is mandatory for the investment. Ongoing program in the current guideline and currently not limited in time.

KfW Loan no. 293: Climate Protection Offensive for Companies With High Self-Consumption

Third-party capital: BUND funding programs finance your electricity storage system

Type of funding

Loan with repayment subsidy: The program offers a low-interest loan from KfW, which is applied for via the house bank. The special feature is the repayment subsidy, which waives part of the original loan amount after successful implementation and inspection (by an expert). This makes the subsidy particularly attractive, as you have to pay back less than you borrowed.

Eligible persons

German commercial enterprises that operate commercially or on a freelance basis as well as municipal companies, institutions and public corporations are eligible to apply.

Funding conditions

The funding is divided into various modules, with the financing of PV systems with storage falling under Module 3: Renewable energies (RE). Investment in photovoltaic systems (PV) and the associated electricity storage systems is eligible for funding. The core requirement is a high level of self-consumption and the system must be used to generate its own electricity. At least 50% of the electricity generated by the subsidized system must be consumed on the company's premises. Interest is fixed for the first few years (e.g. 10 years). Payment of up to 100% of the loan amount is possible. Various term options are offered, which can be selected together with the house bank.

Federal Office Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle BAFA: Energy consulting for SMEs - Module 2 for non-residential buildings

Third-party capital: The right subsidy programmes finance your electricity storage system

Type of funding

Promotion of quality-assured energy consultations on an energy refurbishment concept to analyze efficiency potential, including the sensible integration of an electricity storage system.

Eligible persons

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and members of the liberal professions that meet the EU definition. Non-SMEs with a total energy consumption of no more than 500,000 kWh/year.

Funding conditions

BAFA subsidizes the energy consultation with a grant towards the fee of the approved energy consultant. The subsidy amounts to 50% of the eligible consultancy fee, up to a maximum of 4,000 euros. Runs continuously under the current funding guideline; evaluations show ongoing implementation. There are currently no time limits on the program.
