Giga Coating and System Trailers Rely on Battery Storage and Solar Power

Munich/Essen, July 16, 2025 – With the seamless integration of solar power and storage technology, surface coater Giga Coating GmbH and vehicle manufacturer System Trailers Fahrzeugbau GmbH are paving the way for an energy self-sufficient industrial site. Together, they are utilising an smart combination of photovoltaics (PV) and electricity storage to power their energy-intensive production in Twist in Emsland. A stationary battery storage system from STABL Energy now complements the energy system.

This is not only used for the temporary storage of self-generated solar power, but also enables the company to make targeted use of dynamic electricity tariffs and peak shaving in the form of atypical grid usage. This enables the company to better manage its own consumption in future, distribute its peak loads in a controlled manner and significantly reduce its electricity costs.

Maximum efficiency, maximum independence

In the period from 2022 to 2025, partner company Greenflash GmbH installed photovoltaic systems with an output of over 2 MWp on the roofs of the Giga Coating and System Trailers halls . The systems are controlled by the GreenX1 Controller™, which distributes the solar power generated to the company’s consumers as required. Previously, surplus electricity was mainly fed into the grid. With the storage solution installed in June 2025, which Greenflash planned together with STABL Energy, this electricity can now be efficiently stored temporarily and used in a targeted manner.

Climate-neutral coating with solar power and battery storage

“To ensure a secure, stable and affordable energy supply, we are supplementing our PV generation with a powerful battery. This allows us to use significantly more of our own PV electricity, limit the ever more expensive voltage peaks and also participate in arbitrage trading. By combining STABL battery technology with Greenflash’s innovative control technology, we can get the best out of the technologies for ourselves. The deep integration of renewable energies into our dynamic industrial energy network is the key to profitability and sustainability for us,” emphasizes Ralf Saatkamp, Managing Director of Giga Coating and System Trailers.

A STABL battery storage system with a total of 288 second-chance battery modules will be used in the first construction phase. These modules were originally intended for electric vehicles and are now being given a second life thanks to STABL’s multilevel inverter technology. With a usable storage capacity of 1,233 kWh and an output of 405 kW, the storage system makes a significant contribution to smoothing load peaks and reducing grid charges due to atypical grid usage. This allows the company to use its self-generated solar power even more efficiently and make itself less dependent on fossil fuels and volatile electricity prices.
